University of Michigan’s Work Toward Autonomous Cars

University of Michigan’s Work Toward Autonomous Cars Eustice, Ryan Self-driving test vehicles have become a reality on roadways, and there is an ever-present push toward making them a consumer product in the not-so-distant future. In this talk, I will give an overview of some of our previous work in collaboration with Ford Motor Company in full-scale automated driving. In particular, we’ll look at some of our successes in high-definition map building and precision localization, including our recent work in cross-modality localization using vision within a priori LIDAR maps as well as localization in snow using Gaussian mixture maps. We’ll also discuss our new unique Mcity test facility for connected and automated driving. Presented on April 20, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. in the Marcus Nanotechnology Building, room 1116.; Ryan M. Eustice is an associate professor in the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan where he additionally holds joint appointments in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is the director of the Perceptual Robotics Laboratory (PeRL), a mobile robotics laboratory focused on algorithm development in the areas of robotic perception, navigation, and mapping. His active research projects include applications for autonomous underwater ship hull inspection, multi-vehicle cooperative underwater navigation, benthic high-resolution mapping, and automotive active safety and self-driving capabilities.; Runtime: 65:39 minutes

Advances in Ion Trap Quantum Computing

Advances in Ion Trap Quantum Computing Fallek, Spencer With the advent of very-large-scale integration (VLSI), we have seen incredible improvements in computational power over the past four decades. However, there are certain problems which are untenable even with the most advanced computing resources available to us today and in the foreseeable future. A few of these key problems can be solved via a quantum computer using quantum bits (qubits). Two main problems of interest are simulating quantum systems for chemical dynamics, and factoring large numbers for cryptography. In the Quantum Information Systems group at GTRI, we have been working on developing a quantum computer with trapped-ion qubits. In this talk, I will discuss the efforts at GTRI to scale up such a quantum processor and the technical challenges that lie ahead. I will highlight novel ion trap designs, as well as preliminary work towards elementary quantum algorithms that surpass their classical counterpart. Presented at the Nano@Tech Meeting on April 12, 2016 at 12 noon in room 1116-1118 of the Marcus Nanotechnology Building.; Spencer Fallek has been working on quantum information technologies for the past four years. He joined GTRI’s Quantum Systems Group in 2013 as a Research Scientist. Prior to that, he was a student at Duke University in the Multifunctional Integrated Systems Technology group. His research interests include atomic physics, quantum information, and low-noise analog and digital hardware for quantum control.; Runtime: 38:24 minutes

The Manipulation Action Grammar: A Key to Intelligent Robots

The Manipulation Action Grammar: A Key to Intelligent Robots Aloimonos, Yiannis Humanoid robots will need to learn the actions that humans perform. They will need to recognize these actions when they see them and they will need to perform these actions themselves. In this presentation, it is proposed that this learning task can be achieved using the manipulation grammar. Context-free grammars have been in fashion in linguistics because they provide a simple and precise mechanism for describing the methods by which phrases in some natural language are built from smaller blocks. Also, the basic recursive structure of natural languages, the way in which clauses nest inside other clauses, and the way in which lists of adjectives and adverbs are followed by nouns and verbs, is described exactly. Similarly, for manipulation actions, every complex activity is built from smaller blocks involving hands and their movements, as well as objects, tools and the monitoring of their state. Thus, interpreting a “seen” action is like understanding language, and executing an action from knowledge in memory is like producing language. Several experiments will be shown interpreting human actions in the arts and crafts or assembly domain, through a parsing of the visual input, on the basis of the manipulation grammar. This parsing, in order to be realized, requires a network of visual processes that attend to objects and tools, segment them and recognize them, track the moving objects and hands, and monitor the state of objects to calculate goal completion. These processes will also be explained and we will conclude with demonstrations of robots learning how to perform tasks by watching videos of relevant human activities. Presented on April 6, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. in the Marcus Nanotechnology Building, room 1116.; Yiannis "John" Aloimonos is a professor of computer science and director of the Computer Vision Laboratory. His research has been supported over the years by NSF, NIH, ONR, DARPA, IBM, Honeywell, Dassault, Westinghouse, Google, Honda and the European Union. For the past five years, he has been working on cognitive systems under the project POETICON, and more recently under the NSF Cyberphysical Systems Program.; Runtime: 66:57 minutes

Discrete Element Modeling of shielding and size effects during single particle crushing

Discrete Element Modeling of shielding and size effects during single particle crushing Wang, Pei; Arson, Chloé In granular assemblies such as soil, ballast, cementitious aggregates, food and medical products, particle fragmentation and crushing alter material properties. The goal of this research work is to better understand the microstructure parameters that control the triggering of fragmentation, and to predict how microstructure evolution consequent to crushing can actually enhance or reduce material properties. We focused on size and shielding e ects, which respectively refer to the decrease of particle strength with increasing particle size, and to the increase of particle strength with the redistribution of stress towards hydrostatic stress conditions upon crushing of neighboring particles. We calibrated the parameters of a Distinct Element Method (DEM) cluster model of crushable particle so as to match the displacement and axial force obtained experimentally at the first particle fragmentation. In order to study the in uence of the coordination number on particle crushing, we modeled the mechanical confinement effect of neighboring particles by placing rigid walls around the DEM cluster. In order to understand why larger particles have lower tensile strength, we studied size effects on the crushing process of clusters with and without internal flaws. We found that for clusters with a porosity ranging between 0% and 30%, tensile strength only depends on porosity and not on aw size. Overall results show that particle strength depends: (1) linearly on particle coordination number; (2) quadratically on particle porosity. Theoretical and DEM modeling of particle crushing will advance the fundamental understanding of energy transfer in particulate media.
