[hal-01141851] A successful form of interaction in Compensatory Policy Classrooms: Processes of Ostentation and Masking. A case study in French Physical Education.

Since 2010, French middle schools with a high enrolment of difficult students have benefited from a compensatory policy called ‘Ecoles Colleges et Lycees pour l’Ambition, l’Innovation et la Reussite’ (ECLAIR) (Primary and Secondary Schools for Ambition, Innovation and Success). These difficult students frequently misbehave, disengage from academic tasks and provoke conflict in the classroom. However, some physical education (PE) teachers are able to develop successful teaching strategies. This case study has analysed precisely the activity of the teacher in relation to the activity of the students in these difficult classes. It examined the successful forms of interaction between teachers and students in PE classes and sought to determine the meaning of these interactions in structuring a ‘difficult’ classroom culture. The study was conducted within a situated cognitive anthropology framework in middle schools enrolled in the ECLAIR programme. Eight successful PE teachers and 24 students between the ages of 12 and 16 were involved in this qualitative study. The results revealed that, in spite of divergent intentions, the respective activities of the teachers and students remained coordinated. This coordination was based on a recurrent form of classroom interaction that made use of processes of ostentation and masking.

[tel-01111912] Conservative coupling method between an inviscid compressible fluid flow and a three-dimensional deformable structure with possible fragmentation

We develop a coupling method between an inviscid compressible fluid and a three dimensional mobile structure. We consider first a rigid structure, then a deformable, and finally a fragmenting one. The coupling hinges on a Conservative Immersed Boundary method combined with a Finite Volume method for the fluid and a Discrete Element method for the structure. The method yields conservation of mass, momentum, and energy of the system. The method also exhibits consistency properties, such as the absence of numerical roughness on a rigid wall. The method is explicit in time in the case of a rigid structure, and semi-implicit when the structure is deformable. The time semi-implicit method avoids that tangential deformations of the structure impact the fluid, and the method converges geometrically with a non-restrictive CFL condition on the time step. We present numerical results showing the robustness of the method in the case of a rigid sphere lifted by a shock wave, a clamped beam flexed by a shock wave, and a cylinder undergoing fragmentation owing to an intern explosion

[hal-00759939] Runup estimations on a macrotidal sandy beach

This paper presents a methodological approach to calculate runup from the analysis of morphodynamic conditions in a macrotidal environment. The method is based on measurements of the elevation of high-tide deposits and on the analysis of morphological and hydrodynamic changes. A series of measurements has been carried out on the beach of Vougot (Brittany, France) under different wave conditions. This allowed to assess runup formula effectiveness in a macrotidal environment and to determine the best slope parameters to estimate runup. The results suggest that in macrotidal environments the slope of the active section of the upper beach should be used instead of the entire slope of the foreshore, the latter resulting in an underestimation of runup elevations when used in predictive equations from the literature. Results obtained with widely used equations are relatively well correlated with observed values (r² = 0.59). An analysis of the relationship between observed runup elevations and various variables has enabled the establishment of a runup estimation formula with a relatively good fit to the study site (r² = 0.88).

[halshs-01109062] What Predicts a Successful Life? A Life-course Model of Well-being

Policy makers who care about well-being need a recursive model of how adult life-satisfaction is predicted by childhood influences, acting both directly and (indirectly) through adult circumstances. We estimate such a model using the British Cohort Study (1970). We show that the most powerful childhood predictor of adult life-satisfaction is the child's emotional health, followed by the child's conduct. The least powerful predictor is the child's intellectual development. This may have implications for educational policy. Among adult circumstances, family income accounts for only 0.5% of the variance of life-satisfaction. Mental and physical health are much more important.

[hal-00848207] Analysis of elite swimmers' activity during an instrumented protocol

The aim of this study was to examine swimmers' activity-technical device coupling during an experimental protocol (MADsystem). The study was conducted within a course-of-action theoretical and methodological framework. Two types of data were collected: (a) video recordings and (b) verbalizations during post-protocol interviews. The data were processed in two steps: (a) reconstruction of each swimmer's course of action and (b) comparison of the courses of action. Analysis from the actors' point of view allowed a description of swimmer-technical device coupling. The results showed that the technical device modified the athletes' range of perceptions and repertoire of actions. They also indicated that changes in coupling between the swimmers and the MAD-system were linked to utilization constraints: the swimmers' experiences were transformed in the same speed intervals, suggesting that this was an essential situational constraint to swimmer-technical device coupling. This study highlights how a technical device and the conditions of its use changed athletes' activity and suggests that it is important to develop activity-centred design in sport.

[insu-01143663] Geographic distribution of zonal wind and UV albedo at cloud top level from VMC camera on Venus Express: Influence of Venus topography through stationary gravity waves vertical propagation.

Geographic distribution of zonal wind and UV albedo at cloud top level from VMC camera on Venus Express: Influence of Venus topography through stationary gravity waves vertical propagation. UV images (at 365 nm) of Venus cloud top collected with VMC camera on board Venus Express allowed to derive a large number of wind measurements at altitude 67±2 km from tracking of cloud features in the period 2006-2012. Both manual (45,600) and digital (391,600) individual wind measurements over 127 orbits were analyzed showing various patterns with latitude and local time. A new longitude-latitude geographic map of the zonal wind shows a conspicuous region of strongly decreased zonal wind, a remarkable feature that was unknown up to now. While the average zonal wind near equator (from 5 • S to 15 • s) is-100.9 m/s in the longitude range 200-330 • , it reaches-83.4 m/s in the range 60-100 • , a difference of 17.5 m/s. When compared to the altimetry map of Venus, it is found that the zonal wind pattern is well correlated with the underlying relief in the region of Aphrodite Terra, with a downstream shift of about 30 • (∼3,200 km). We interpret this pattern as the result of stationary gravity waves produced at ground level by the up lift of air when the horizontal wind encounters a mountain slope. These waves can propagate up to cloud top level, break there and transfer their momentum to the zonal flow. A similar phenomenon is known to operate on Earth with an influence on mesospheric winds. The LMD-GCM for Venus was run with or without topography, with and without a parameterization of gravity waves and does not display such an observed change of velocity near equator. The cloud albedo map at 365 nm varies also in longitude and latitude. We speculate that it might be the result of increased vertical mixing associated to wave breaking, and decreased abundance of the UV absorber which makes the contrast in images. The impact of these new findings on current super rotation theories remains to be assessed. This work was triggered by the presence of a conspicuous peak at 117 days in a time series of wind measurements. This is the length of the solar day as seen at the ground of Venus. Since VMC measurements are done preferably in a local time window centred on the sub-solar point, any parameter having a geographic longitude dependence will show a peak at 117 days.

[insu-01143662] Measuring the solar radius with PICARD during the rising phase of solar cycle 24

The PICARD project involves not only a space mission but also a ground-based observatory at Calern (France) dedicated to the study of the Sun. Thus, measurements are taken in orbit by the PICARD mission satellite in order to avoid the impact of atmospheric effects. Nevertheless, it is important to understand and interpret the ground-based measurements, which actually constitute the longest series of currently available measurements. This is why an important ground-based measurement programme (" PICARD SOL ") is associated with the space operation before, during, and after the PICARD space mission. Space observations are a priori most favourable, however, space entails also technical challenges, a harsh environment, and a finite mission lifetime. The PICARD spacecraft, launched on June 15, 2010 was retired in April 2014. On ground, the instruments are less affected by in-space degradation and maintenance is easily provided, so, if the atmosphere is properly monitored and taken into account, they still represent an opportunity to generate the needed long-term time-series. That is why ground measurements have been carried out since May 2011, and will be pursued after the space program. In this talk, we will describe both sets of instruments, and then will present our current results. We will highlight the importance of ground-based and space measurements. Indeed, our measurements show the benefit of simultaneous measurements obtained from ground and space observatories.

[hal-00937484] Constraining mass-diameter relations from hydrometeor images and cloud radar reflectivities in tropical continental and oceanic convective anvils

In this study the density of hydrometeors in tropical clouds is derived from a combined analysis of particle images from 2-D-array probes and associated reflectivities measured with a Doppler cloud radar on the same research aircraft. The mass-diameter m(D) relationship is expressed as a power law with two unknown coefficients (pre-factor, exponent) that need to be constrained from complementary information on hydrometeors, where absolute ice density measurement methods do not apply. Here, at first an extended theoretical study of numerous hydrometeor shapes simulated in 3-D and arbitrarily projected on a 2-D plane allowed to constrain the temporal evolution of the exponent of the mass-diameter relationship with that of the exponent of the surface-diameter relationship that is measured by the 2-D-array probes. The pre-factor is then constrained from theoretical simulations of the radar reflectivities matching the measured reflectivities along the aircraft trajectory. The study has been performed as part of the Megha-Tropiques satellite project, where two types of mesoscale convective systems (MCS) have been investigated: (i) above the African Continent and (ii) above the Indian Ocean. In general, both mass-diameter coefficients (pre-factor and exponent) decrease with decreasing temperature, the decrease is more pronounced for oceanic MCS. The condensed water contents (CWC) calculated from particle size distributions (PSD) and m(D) also decrease with altitude while the concentrations of the hydrometeors increase with altitude. The calculated values of CWC are largest for continental MCS.

[hal-00956379] Denitrification by large NAT particles: the impact of reduced settling velocities and hints on particle characteristics

Vertical redistribution of HNO3 through condensation, sedimentation and evaporation of large HNO3-containing particles inside polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) plays an important role in the chemistry of the Arctic winter stratosphere. In situ observations by the particle probe FSSP-100 during the RECONCILE campaign indicate unexpected large potential NAT (nitric acid trihydrate) particles inside PSCs. The observations can hardly be explained assuming particles with compact morphology and spherical shape due to limited growing time at temperatures below the existence temperature of NAT (TNAT). Utilizing simulations by the CLaMS and measurements by the airborne Fourier transform infrared spectrometer MIPAS-STR we study the impact of reduced settling velocities of NAT particles on vertical HNO3 redistribution. Reduced settling velocities are expected for spherical NAT particles with low mass density or aspheric NAT particles that might explain the maximum sizes of the particles observed in situ. The results of our study support the hypothesis that denitrification is produced by significantly aspheric (i.e. columnar) compact NAT particles which are characterised by reduced settling velocities.

[hal-01134061] Electric charging of dust particles : impact on the variations of electric field and electric resistivity of air

Short Dipole Antenna is proposed in the frame of the Dust Package onboard the ROSCOSMOS-ESA ExoMars Lander. The SDA is developed to measure the electric field from few µVm-1 to few tens kVm-1 in the frequency range form DC to few kHz. the SDA concept and the model of its electric coupling with the air were tested and justified in the Nevada desert, in the conditions of dust devils generation. We illustrate our presentation with few examples of earth's observations, present simple models that explain the measured electric field and its correlation with the electric charge of the dust/sand particles, their density and motion. Comparative analysis between Earth and Mars cases is discussed
