Filtered Iterators For Safe and Robust Programs in RIFL
Filtered Iterators For Safe and Robust Programs in RIFL Shen, Jiasi; Rinard, Martin We present a new language construct, filtered iterators, for safe and robust input processing. Filtered iterators are designed to eliminate many common input-processing errors while enabling robust continued execution. The design is inspired by (a) observed common input-processing errors and (b) continued execution strategies that are implemented by developers fixing input validation errors. Filtered iterators decompose inputs into input units, atomically and automatically discarding units that trigger errors. Statistically significant results from a developer study highlight the difficulties that developers encounter when developing input-processing code using standard language constructs. These results also demonstrate the effectiveness of filtered iterators in eliminating many of these difficulties and enabling developers to produce safe and robust input-processing code.

Jenga: Harnessing Heterogeneous Memories through Reconfigurable Cache Hierarchies
Jenga: Harnessing Heterogeneous Memories through Reconfigurable Cache Hierarchies Beckmann, Nathan; Tsai, Po-An; Sanchez, Daniel Conventional memory systems are organized as a rigid hierarchy, with multiple levels of progressively larger and slower memories. Hierarchy allows a simple, fixed design to benefit a wide range of applications, because working sets settle at the smallest (and fastest) level they fit in. However, rigid hierarchies also cause significant overheads, because each level adds latency and energy even when it does not capture the working set. In emerging systems with heterogeneous memory technologies such as stacked DRAM, these overheads often limit performance and efficiency. We propose Jenga, a reconfigurable cache hierarchy that avoids these pathologies and approaches the performance of a hierarchy optimized for each application. Jenga monitors application behavior and dynamically builds virtual cache hierarchies out of heterogeneous, distributed cache banks. Jenga uses simple hardware support and a novel software runtime to configure virtual cache hierarchies. On a 36-core CMP with a 1 GB stacked-DRAM cache, Jenga outperforms a combination of state-of-the-art techniques by 10% on average and by up to 36%, and does so while saving energy, improving system-wide energy-delay product by 29% on average and by up to 96%.

Bridging Theory and Practice in Cache Replacement
Bridging Theory and Practice in Cache Replacement Beckmann, Nathan; Sanchez, Daniel Much prior work has studied processor cache replacement policies, but a large gap remains between theory and practice. The optimal policy (MIN) requires unobtainable knowledge of the future, and prior theoretically-grounded policies use reference models that do not match real programs. Meanwhile, practical policies are designed empirically. Lacking a strong theoretical foundation, they do not make the best use of the information available to them. This paper bridges theory and practice. We propose that practical policies should replace lines based on their economic value added (EVA), the difference of their expected hits from the average. We use Markov decision processes to show that EVA is optimal under some reasonable simplifications. We present an inexpensive, practical implementation of EVA and evaluate it exhaustively over many cache sizes. EVA outperforms prior practical policies and saves area at iso-performance. These results show that formalizing cache replacement yields practical benefits.

Cache Calculus: Modeling Caches through Differential Equations
Cache Calculus: Modeling Caches through Differential Equations Beckmann, Nathan; Sanchez, Daniel Caches are critical to performance, yet their behavior is hard to understand and model. In particular, prior work does not provide closed-form solutions of cache performance, i.e. simple expressions for the miss rate of a specific access pattern. Existing cache models instead use numerical methods that, unlike closed-form solutions, are computationally expensive and yield limited insight. We present cache calculus, a technique that models cache behavior as a system of ordinary differential equations, letting standard calculus techniques find simple and accurate solutions of cache performance for common access patterns.

Supplementary materials for "ProppLearner: Deeply Annotating a Corpus of Russian Folktales to Enable the Machine Learning of a Russian Formalist Theory" Alan, Finlayson, Mark This archive contains the supplementary material for the journal article "ProppLearner: Deeply Annotating a Corpus of Russian Folktales to Enable the Machine Learning of a Russian Formalist Theory", publishing in the Journal of Digital Scholarship in the Humanities (DSH), ca. 2016.The archive contains several different types of files. First, it contains the annotation guides that were used to train the annotators. The guides are numbered to match the team numbers in Table 6. Included here are not only detailed guides for some layers, as produced by the original developers of the specification, but also our synopsis guides for each layer, which were used as a reference and further training material for the annotators. Also of interest are the general annotator and adjudicator training guides, which outline the general procedures followed by the teams when conducting annotation. Those who are organizing their own annotation projects may find this material useful.Second, the archive contains a comprehensive manifest, in Excel spreadsheet format, listing the word counts, sources, types, and titles (in both Russian and English) of all the texts that are part of the corpus. Finally, the archive contains the actual corpus data files, in Story Workbench format, an XML-encoded stand-off annotation scheme. The scheme is described in the file format specification file, also included in the archive. These files can be parsed with the aid of any normal XML reading software, or can be loaded and edited easily with the Story Workbench annotation tool, also freely available.

Peptide and Protein Nanomaterials: The Design Challenge
Peptide and Protein Nanomaterials: The Design Challenge Conticello, Vincent Structurally defined materials on the nanometer length-scale have been historically the most challenging to rationally construct and the most difficult to structurally analyze. Sequence-specific biomolecules, i.e., proteins and nucleic acids, have advantages as design elements for construction of these types of nano-scale materials in that correlations can be drawn between sequence and higher order structure, potentially affording ordered assemblies in which functional properties can be controlled through the progression of structural hierarchy encoded at the molecular level. However, the predictable design of self-assembled structures requires precise structural control of the interfaces between peptide subunits (protomers). In contrast to the robustness of protein tertiary structure, quaternary structure has been postulated to be labile with respect to mutagenesis of residues located at the protein-protein interface. We have employed simple self-assembling peptide systems to interrogate the concept of designability of interfaces within the structural context of nanotubes and nanosheets (see below). These peptide systems provide a framework for understanding how minor sequence changes in evolution can translate into very large changes in supramolecular structure, which provides significant evidence that the designability of protein interfaces is a critical consideration for control of supramolecular structure in self-assembling systems. Presented on November 10, 2015 at 12 noon in the Pettit Microelectronics Building Conference Room 102 A&B, Georgia Tech.; Vincent P. Conticello is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Emory University. His research interests lie in the design, synthesis, and characterization of synthetic materials derived from self-assembly of sequence-specific proteins and peptides. Vincent received his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Northwestern University under the direction of Professor Tobin Marks. He completed post-doctoral fellowships in Chemistry at Caltech (under Professor Robert Grubbs) and in Polymer Science at UMass-Amherst (under Professor David Tirrell). He joined Emory University as an Assistant Professor in 1995.; Runtime: 58:15 minutes

Perovskite Solar Cells; Outshining Silicon
Perovskite Solar Cells; Outshining Silicon Snaith, Henry J. The cost of generating electricity from sun light using photovoltaic devices has continued to drop extensively over the last decade. Now in some locations in the world, PV generated electricity is cheaper than that from any other source. As the costs continue to drop and the efficiency of the PV modules continues to rise, the economic argument for globally widespread deployment of PV will become impossible to ignore. There have already been such advances in manufacturing the PV modules, that now the majority of the cost of a PV installation is the non-module costs, such as physical frames, electrical power handling, land and other soft costs. Therefore, from a PV technology perspective the most straight forward means to ensure the continuing drop in the cost of PV electricity is to enhance the efficiency of the modules. Current deployed PV is predominantly based on single-junction crystalline silicon. Most modules today are around 15 to 17% efficiency, with the more advanced “silicon technologies” promising modules of around 22%, but single junction silicon has a practical efficiency limit of around 25%. To move beyond this will require fundamentally superior technologies. Within the last few years organic-inorganic halide perovskites have risen to become a very promising PV material, captivating the research community, with the lab based cell efficiency rising form 4% to over 20% within a few years. In the most efficient devices, the perovskite semiconductor is present as a solid absorber layer sandwiched between negative (n) and positive (p)-type charge collection contacts. The perovskite itself is crystalized at low temperature by either, mixing precursor salts in a solvent and casting from solution, or via sublimation of the same salts under vacuum. Improving solar cell operation is reliant upon understanding and controlling thin-film crystallisation and controlling the nature of the p and n-type contacts. In addition, understanding and enhancing long term stability of the materials and devices if a key driver. One key advantage perovskites have over silicon is that the band gap (the lowest energy at which the material absorbs light) can be tuned broadly from around 1.2eV to 2.4eV. This enables the possibility of realising multi-junction solar cells, which could deliver much higher efficiency than single junction silicon, by either combining perovskites with silicon, or on their own. Snaith presents his work on developing thin film perovskite solar cells, introducing the technology and putting it into the broader perspective of the global PV industry. He discusses areas in which he has made recent advances and discuss the current status and potential for the “hybrid” perovskite-on-silicon tandem concept. He also presents broader applications where perovskite cells could find markets not currently met with crystalline silicon PV. Presented as the 3rd Annual Sigma-Aldrich Distinguished Lecture on November 10, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the Engineered Biosystems Building (EBB), room 1005.; Professor Henry J. Snaith FRS leads a research group at Oxford University and is CSO and Founder of Oxford PV Ltd. His work is focused on developing new materials for photovoltaics and understanding and controlling the physical processes occurring within the devices. He has made a number of advances and discoveries, with the most notable being the discovery of the remarkable PV properties of metal halide perovskites.; Runtime: 59:57 minutes

Building a Cell from the Bottom Up
Building a Cell from the Bottom Up Ross, Jennifer Biology utilizes energy to organize itself from the nanoscale to the macroscopic scale. We seek to determine the universal principles of organization from the molecular scale that give rise to architecture on the cellular scale. We are specifically interested in the organization of the microtubule cytoskeleton, a rigid, yet versatile network in most cell types. The microtubule network is organized by associated motor proteins and crosslinkers that are either active (use energy) or passive. The work I will present applies the ideas of statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics to the non-equilibrium pattern formation behind intracellular organization using the microtubule cytoskeleton as the building blocks. We examine these processes in a bottom-up manner by adding increasingly complex protein actors into the system. Our systematic experiments expose nature’s laws for nanoscale to micron scale organization and have large impacts on biology as well as illuminating new frontiers of active matter physics. Presented on November 9, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. in the Klaus Advanced Computing Building, room 1116W.; Jennifer Ross is an Associate Professor in the Physics Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.; Runtime: 55:41 minutes

Dynamic Prefetching of Data Tiles for Interactive Visualization
Dynamic Prefetching of Data Tiles for Interactive Visualization Battle, Leilani; Chang, Remco; Stonebraker, Michael In this paper, we present ForeCache, a general-purpose tool for exploratory browsing of large datasets. ForeCache utilizes a client-server architecture, where the user interacts with a lightweight client-side interface to browse datasets, and the data to be browsed is retrieved from a DBMS running on a back-end server. We assume a detail-on-demand browsing paradigm, and optimize the back-end support for this paradigm by inserting a separate middleware layer in front of the DBMS. To improve response times, the middleware layer fetches data ahead of the user as she explores a dataset. We consider two different mechanisms for prefetching: (a) learning what to fetch from the user's recent movements, and (b) using data characteristics (e.g., histograms) to find data similar to what the user has viewed in the past. We incorporate these mechanisms into a single prediction engine that adjusts its prediction strategies over time, based on changes in the user's behavior. We evaluated our prediction engine with a user study, and found that our dynamic prefetching strategy provides: (1) significant improvements in overall latency when compared with non-prefetching systems (430% improvement); and (2) substantial improvements in both prediction accuracy (25% improvement) and latency (88% improvement) relative to existing prefetching techniques.

Understanding Particles and Fields Throughout the Solar System
Understanding Particles and Fields Throughout the Solar System Baker, Daniel Even before the official dawn of the Space Age – that is, before the launch of the Sputnik and Explorer spacecraft in 1957-1958 – many investigators around the world were engaged in space physics research. Using sounding rockets to get to the fringes of outer space, early researchers made pioneering observations of the Sun and Earth’s upper atmosphere. This talk will recount some of the earlier history of contributions to Sun-Earth (“solar terrestrial”) studies. A principal focus of the talk will be the modern studies of energetic particles and electromagnetic fields in Earth’s cosmic neighborhood. CU-Boulder LASP (Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics) has been playing an increasingly prominent role in forefront studies of Earth’s “magnetosphere” and LASP researchers are using this core terrestrial knowledge to advance planetary and astrophysical understanding as well. Moreover, study and understanding of the space environment of Earth is absolutely essential for our knowledge of “space weather” which represents a major threat to our modern technological society. The presentation will address all these aspects and will conclude with a look forward to future solar system programs and opportunities. Presented on October 7, 2015 in the Scheller College of Business, LeCraw Auditorium at 6:00 p.m.; Dr. Daniel Baker is director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado-Boulder and is Distinguished Professor of Planetary and Space Physics there. He holds the Moog-Broad Reach Chair of Space Sciences at CU.; Runtime: 72:31 minutes

Quantum Crystals, Quantum Computing, Quantum Cognition
Quantum Crystals, Quantum Computing, Quantum Cognition Fisher, Matthew Quantum mechanics is down to earth - quite literally - since the electrons within the tiny crystals found in a handful of dirt manifest a dizzying world of quantum motion. Each crystal has it’s own unique choreography, with the electrons entangled in a myriad of quantum dances. Quantum entanglement also holds the promise of futuristic Quantum Computers - which might be comprised of electron and nuclear spins inside diamond, or of atoms confined in traps, or of small superconducting grains, among a plethora of suggested platforms. In this talk I will describe ongoing efforts to elucidate the mysteries of Quantum Crystals, to design and assemble Quantum Computers, before ruminating about “Quantum Cognition” - the proposal that our brains are capable of quantum processing. Presented on October 5, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. in the Howey Physics Building, Lecture Hall 3.; Matthew Fisher is a Professor at the University of California Santa Barbara School of Physics.; Runtime: 68:09 minutes

Big Data Privacy Scenarios
Big Data Privacy Scenarios Bruce, Elizabeth; Sollins, Karen; Vernon, Mona; Weitzner, Danny This paper is the first in a series on privacy in Big Data. As an outgrowth of a series of workshops on the topic, the Big Data Privacy Working Group undertook a study of a series of use scenarios to highlight the challenges to privacy that arise in the Big Data arena. This is a report on those scenarios. The deeper question explored by this exercise is what is distinctive about privacy in the context of Big Data. In addition, we discuss an initial list of issues for privacy that derive specifically from the nature of Big Data. These derive from observations across the real world scenarios and use cases explored in this project as well as wider reading and discussions:* Scale: The sheer size of the datasets leads to challenges in creating, managing and applying privacy policies.* Diversity: The increased likelihood of more and more diverse participants in Big Data collection, management, and use, leads to differing agendas and objectives. By nature, this is likely to lead to contradictory agendas and objectives.* Integration: With increased data management technologies (e.g. cloud services, data lakes, and so forth), integration across datasets, with new and often surprising opportunities for cross-product inferences, will also come new information about individuals and their behaviors.* Impact on secondary participants: Because many pieces of information are reflective of not only the targeted subject, but secondary, often unattended, participants, the inferences and resulting information will increasingly be reflective of other people, not originally considered as the subject of privacy concerns and approaches.* Need for emergent policies for emergent information: As inferences over merged data sets occur, emergent information or understanding will occur. Although each unique data set may have existing privacy policies and enforcement mechanisms, it is not clear that it is possible to develop the requisite and appropriate emerged privacy policies and appropriate enforcement of them automatically.

Designing a Context-Sensitive Context Detection Service for Mobile Devices
Designing a Context-Sensitive Context Detection Service for Mobile Devices Chen, Tiffany Yu-Han; Sivaraman, Anirudh; Das, Somak; Ravindranath, Lenin; Balakrishnan, Hari This paper describes the design, implementation, and evaluation of Amoeba, a context-sensitive context detection service for mobile devices. Amoeba exports an API that allows a client to express interest in one or more context types (activity, indoor/outdoor, and entry/exit to/from named regions), subscribe to specific modes within each context (e.g., "walking" or "running", but no other activity), and specify a response latency (i.e., how often the client is notified). Each context has a detector that returns its estimate of the mode. The detectors take both the desired subscriptions and the current context detection into account, adjusting both the types of sensors and the sampling rates to achieve high accuracy and low energy consumption. We have implemented Amoeba on Android. Experiments with Amoeba on 45+ hours of data show that our activity detector achieves an accuracy between 92% and 99%, outperforming previous proposals like UCLA* (59%), EEMSS (82%) and SociableSense (72%), while consuming 4 to 6× less energy.

Network Maximal Correlation
Network Maximal Correlation Feizi, Soheil; Makhdoumi, Ali; Duffy, Ken; Kellis, Manolis; Medard, Muriel Identifying nonlinear relationships in large datasets is a daunting task particularly when the form of the nonlinearity is unknown. Here, we introduce Network Maximal Correlation (NMC) as a fundamental measure to capture nonlinear associations in networks without the knowledge of underlying nonlinearity shapes. NMC infers, possibly nonlinear, transformations of variables with zero means and unit variances by maximizing total nonlinear correlation over the underlying network. For the case of having two variables, NMC is equivalent to the standard Maximal Correlation. We characterize a solution of the NMC optimization using geometric properties of Hilbert spaces for both discrete and jointly Gaussian variables. For discrete random variables, we show that the NMC optimization is an instance of the Maximum Correlation Problem and provide necessary conditions for its global optimal solution. Moreover, we propose an efficient algorithm based on Alternating Conditional Expectation (ACE) which converges to a local NMC optimum. For this algorithm, we provide guidelines for choosing appropriate starting points to jump out of local maximizers. We also propose a distributed algorithm to compute a 1-$\epsilon$ approximation of the NMC value for large and dense graphs using graph partitioning. For jointly Gaussian variables, under some conditions, we show that the NMC optimization can be simplified to a Max-Cut problem, where we provide conditions under which an NMC solution can be computed exactly. Under some general conditions, we show that NMC can infer the underlying graphical model for functions of latent jointly Gaussian variables. These functions are unknown, bijective, and can be nonlinear. This result broadens the family of continuous distributions whose graphical models can be characterized efficiently. We illustrate the robustness of NMC in real world applications by showing its continuity with respect to small perturbations of joint distributions. We also show that sample NMC (NMC computed using empirical distributions) converges exponentially fast to the true NMC value. Finally, we apply NMC to different cancer datasets including breast, kidney and liver cancers, and show that NMC infers gene modules that are significantly associated with survival times of individuals while they are not detected using linear association measures.

Organic and Hybrid Materials for Photonics and Electronics
Organic and Hybrid Materials for Photonics and Electronics Perry, Joseph In this talk, I will present an overview of my group’s research on materials for photonics and electronics. Polymethine dyes are promising materials for nonlinear optical processes such as all-optical signal processing (AOSP) but efforts to utilize these dyes at high concentrations has been impeded by aggregation that has deleterious effects on the optical nonlinearity and optical absorption loss. We are researching strategies to block polymethines from aggregating by substitution with rigid, bulky groups that project out of the plane polymethine. This approach has lead to high-number-density films with macroscopic nonlinear optical properties and high two-photon figures of merit close to those needed for AOSP. The polymethines developed also exhibit a negative Re| [superscript X(3)]| that is useful in the compensation of spectral broadening in optical fibers. Dielectric materials with high energy density and efficiency are critical for energy storage applications. Charge injection into the dielectric is undesirable as it leads to poor energy extraction efficiency. We have developed silica-organic hybrid sol-gel materials that exhibit high dielectric constant and breakdown strength through improvements in processing and the incorporation of nanoscale charge-blocking layers. Nanoscale charge blocking layers with layer thickness in the range of 100 nm to ~1 nm deposited between have been the dielectric film and the metal (Al) electrodes have led to large improvements in energy density and extraction efficiency. I will highlight our materials research efforts including: processing methods for sol-gel dielectrics, characterization of bilayer capacitors consisting of sol-gel and charge blocking layers. Our investigations provide insights into the development of high-performance dielectric materials/devices from organic/inorganic hybrid materials.; Joseph W. Perry received his B.S in Chemistry at the University of South Florida and his Ph.D. at Caltech. He has been a Professor of Chemistry in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology for 12 years. His research interests include electronic materials for energy storage including sol-gel based dielectrics with high energy/power density, nonlinear properties of conjugated molecules and polymers in nanophotonic structures for all-optical signal processing, and use of two-photon absorption processes for 3D micro- and nano- fabrication. Dr. Perry has received several awards and is a Fellow of OSA, APS, and AAAS. He has published over 240 scientific papers, and is an inventor on 13 issued patents.
