This paper presents the way experienced elementary teachers use textbooks, in mathematics, in order to consider the following questions: what are the characteristics of the teacher's relationship with the textbook and the teacher's use of the textbook? What factors may induce change or stability in the teacher's relationship to the textbook? A survey based upon individual semi-directive interviews leads to our main result: the existence of a texbook shaping the teacher's work. Two interviews are thoroughly analysed in order to give some examples of the nature of this process.
