Precariousness and of informal works notions are used for more than thirty years to indicate major transformations of work worlds. We show the interest and the limits of these two concepts by taking into account both as mirrors to understand dynamics of societies for which they were not initially thought. We place the use and the meaning of those categories in their two national contexts and according to their domains of use: political, institutional, academic and popular. We begin by placing the social and historical conditions of appearance of both concepts, to end by evoking the possibilities of rethinking them by considering the characteristics of the phenomena at which they aim.
