Chaotic Music and Fractal Art: A Glimpse into the Neurophysiology of Aesthetics
Chaotic Music and Fractal Art: A Glimpse into the Neurophysiology of Aesthetics Glass, Leon The enjoyment of music and art are uniquely human experiences. Yet we still do not understand the attributes that lead us to appreciate some artistic works and not others. In this talk I will address how concepts in mathematics and physics can help us to think about these matters. Chaos refers to irregular time series that are generated following a definite set of deterministic rules. A fractal is an image, in which magnification of a small region is similar to the whole. I will give examples of how the concepts of chaos and fractals can be exploited to propose simple computer algorithms that can be used to generate sequences of sounds and images. I will also show how random patterns of dots can be manipulated to generate displays that are visually interesting, and that can be used as an input to probe the physiological processes underlying visual perception. The talk will challenge you to think about what you hear and see, and how you do it. Presented on January 27, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons, Room 144.; Leon Glass carries out research on various aspects of application of nonlinear dynamics to physiology and medicine. In particular he has worked on problems associated with respiratory rhythmogenesis and the effects of periodic forcing on respiration, dynamics of tremor and motor control, dynamics of cardiac arrhythmia, visual perception, and dynamics in gene networks. Current research involves studying dynamics of complex dynamics in experimental and theoretical models of cardiac arrhythmias with an emphasis on understanding the mechanisms that lead to the transition from normal heart rhythms to pathological rhythms.; Runtime: 61:52 minutes

Structure – Process - Property Relationships Governing Solution Processed Semiconductor Performance
Structure – Process - Property Relationships Governing Solution Processed Semiconductor Performance Reichmanis, Elsa Polymeric semiconductors are promising materials for the commercialization of large‐area, low‐cost and flexible electronics. Their electrical properties are extremely sensitive to structure at multiple length scales, and process modifications can impact calculated hole mobilities by up to four orders of magnitude. For the readily available semiconducting polymer, poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT), various microstructural features that correlate well with hole mobility have been identified. These include paracrystalline disorder, exciton bandwidth, polymer molecular weight, orientation of crystalline domains, and inter‐grain connectivity. Here, a set of general, robust analysis algorithms will be presented that can be used to statistically quantify two‐dimensional order in microstructures of P3HT‐based OFET devices. Application of these analytical techniques to a variety of shear‐based processing methods indicate that shear‐driven alignment of P3HT fibers can effect substantial improvements in macroscale mobility. Presented on January 26, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. in room 1116-1118 of the Marcus Nanotechnology Building on the Georgia Tech campus.; Elsa Raichmanis is Brook Byars Professor of Sustainability and Professor, Chemical and Biomolacular Engineering at Georgia Tech. Prior to joining Georgia Tech she was Bell Labs Fallow and Director of the Materials Research Department at Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent. She received her Ph.D. and BS degrees in chemistry from Syracuse University. In 1984, she was promoted to Supervisor of the Radiation Sensitive Materials and Application Group, followed by promotion to Head of the Polymer and Organic Materials Research Department in 1994. Dr. Raichmanis was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1995 and has participated in several National Research Council (NRC) activities. She has been active in the American Chemical Society throughout her career, having served as 2003 President of the Society. In other service, she is associate editor of the ACS Journal, Chemistry of Materials. Dr. Raichmanis is the recipient of several awards, including named university lectureships. Sha was awarded the ACS Award in Applied Polymer Science in 1999, and is the 2001 recipient of the Society of Chemical Industry's Parkin Medal. Har research interests include the chemistry, properties and application of materials technologies for photonic and electronic applications, with particular focus on polymeric and nanostructurad materials for advanced technologies. The Raichmanis research group is cum:intly exploring polymeric and hybrid organic/inorganic materials chemistries for electronic and photonic applications, plastic electronics in particular.; Runtime: 42:55 minutes

Changes in Nutrient Dynamics in the Gulf of Mexico due to Increase in Mississippi River Flow
Changes in Nutrient Dynamics in the Gulf of Mexico due to Increase in Mississippi River Flow Taylor, Anna The Gulf of Mexico underwent multiple environmental changes in 2010 and 2011, including the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and a large in increase of freshwater input from the Mississippi River. Both of these events had the potential to change nutrient dynamics. In this study, I focused on the changes of nutrient dynamics in surface water in the northern Gulf of Mexico and what brought about those changes. It was found that surface water nutrient concentrations of nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate were much higher in the year 2011. This change was found to be due to the freshwater input from the Mississippi River through geographical location and relation to salinity.

The Effect of Environmental Factors on Bacteria Associated with Sphagnum Mosses
The Effect of Environmental Factors on Bacteria Associated with Sphagnum Mosses Sexton, William Kyle Sphagnum peat mosses play an important role in the global carbon cycle by sequestering carbon as biomass thorough photosynthesis. Biodegradation in the northern peatlands is slow in part due to acidic and nutrient-poor soil conditions, so biomass accumulates over time as peat. Sphagnum mosses partner with bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen to supplement their nitrogen intake in these nutrient-poor soils. Climate change is altering temperatures, precipitation, and nitrogen deposition rates in the northern peatlands. These changes are accompanied by an increased release of greenhouse gases and a decline in Sphagnum ground coverage. The nitrogen-fixing bacteria associated with Sphagnum mosses need to be studied in order to understand how their relationship will be impacted by climate change. In this study I show that higher pH levels and nutrient concentrations can negatively impact the growth of potential nitrogen-fixing bacteria associated with two species of Sphagnum mosses. I also demonstrate that bacteria associated with these mosses overall are adapted to low-nitrogen conditions and a wide pH range.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Mixed Lipid Bilayer with DPPC and MPPC: Effect of Configurations in Gel-phase.
Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Mixed Lipid Bilayer with DPPC and MPPC: Effect of Configurations in Gel-phase. Kim, Young Kyoung Liposomes, spherical nanoparticles composed of phospholipid bilayers, have been suggested as a drug delivery system for potent chemotherapeutics. As the lipid structure transitions from gel to liquid-crystalline the structure reaches its maximum permeability, which then the encapsulated drugs can be released. As this phase transition occurs with changes in temperature, it has been suggested to incorporate lysolipid as part of the phospholipid bilayer systems to control this transition temperature. This study runs fully atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with flat liposome mixed-dispersed and mixed-island model. Mixed-dispersed model has lysolipid evenly distributed across the structure; Mixed-island model has lysolipid aggregated in the middle of the structure. The system is comprised of 10 percent lysolipid and 90 percent Dipalmitoyl Phosphatidyl Choline (DPPC). MonoPalmitoyl Phoshatidyl Choline (MPPC) is used as lysolipid. The changes in structure through the phase transition are investigated.

Inkjet‐/3D‐Printed Paper/Polymer‐Based "Green" RFID and Wireless Sensor Nodes: The Final Step to Bridge Cognitive Intelligence
Inkjet‐/3D‐Printed Paper/Polymer‐Based "Green" RFID and Wireless Sensor Nodes: The Final Step to Bridge Cognitive Intelligence Tentzeris, Manos M. In this talk, inkjet-printed flexible antennas, RF electronics and sensors fabricated on paper and other polymer (e.g.LCP) substrates are introduced as a system-level solution for ultra-low-cost mass production of UHF Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Tags and Wireless Sensor Nodes (WSN) in an approach that could be easily extended to other microwave and wireless applications. The talk will cover examples from UHF up to the millimeter-wave frequency ranges. A compact inkjet-printed UHF "passive-RFID" antenna using the classic T-match approach and designed to match IC's complex impedance, is presented as a the first demonstrating prototype for this technology. Then, Prof. Tentzeris will briefly touch up the state-of-the-art area of fully-integrated wireless sensor modules on paper or flexible LCP and show the first ever 20 sensor integration with an RFID tag module on paper, as well as numerous 30 multilayer paper-based and LCP-based RF/microwave structures, that could potentially set the foundation for the truly convergent wireless sensor ad-hoc networks of the future with enhanced cognitive intelligence and "rugged" packaging. Prof. Tentzeris will discuss issues concerning the power sources of "near-perpetual" RF modules, including flexible minaturized batteries as well as power-scavenging approaches involving thermal, EM, vibration and solar energy forms. The final step of the presentation will involve examples from wearable (e.g. biomonitoring) antennas and RF modules, as well as the first examples of the integration of inkjet-printed nanotechnology-based (e.g.CNT) sensors on paper and organic substrates. It has to be noted that the talk will review and present challenges for inkjet-printed organic active and nonlinear devices as well as future directions in the area of environmentally-friendly ("green") RF electronics and "smart-skin' conformal sensors. Presented on January 12, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. in room 1116-1118 of the Marcus Nanotechnology Building on the Georgia Tech campus.; Manos M. Tentzeris received the Diploma (magna cum laude) degree in electrical and computer engineering from the National Technical University of Athens and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of Michigan. He has helped develop academic programs in highly integrated/multilayer packaging for RF and wire- less applications using ceramic and organic flexible materials, paper-based RFIDs and sensors, biosensors, wearable electronics, inkjet-printed electronics, green electronics and power scavenging, nanotechnology applications in RF, microwave MEM's, and SOP-integrated (UWB, multiband, millimeter wave, and conformal) antennas, and heads the ATHENA Research Group. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Technical University of Munich, GTRl-lreland, and LAAS-CNRS in Toulouse, France. He has served as the Head of the GT-ECE Electromagnetics Technical Interest Group, as the Georgia Electronic Design Center Associate Director for RF ID/Sensors Research, and as the Georgia Tech NSF-Packaging Research Center Associate Director for RF Research and the RF Alliance Leader. He is currently a Professor with the School of ECE at Georgia Tech. He has given more than 100 invited talks to various universities and companies all over the world and has published more than 580 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings, five books, and 21 book chapters. He is the recipient of numerous awards, most recently the 2015 IET Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation Premium Award and the 2014 Georgia Tech ECE Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award.; Runtime: 53:29 minutes

Toroidal Fun
Toroidal Fun Fernandez-Nieves, Alberto We study the physics of soft materials and also do physics with soft materials. In this talk, I will present an overview of some of our recent work involving, in one or another way, the use of tori. We will cover how we make toroidal and how we stabilize them against surface tension instabilities; this altogether provides an interesting way to 3D print materials. We will then discuss what we use toroidal droplets and hydrogels for. This includes the study of conventional and active liquid crystals confined to toroidal spaces, and addressing whether geometry affects cell behavior. I will then leave the torus and briefly discuss our work with colloidal hydrogels and fire ant aggregations. Presented on January 12, 2016 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in IBB Building room 1128, on the Georgia Tech campus.; Research focus: Soft materials are materials whose properties are determined by internal structures with dimensions between atomic sizes and macroscopic scales. They are characterized by energies that are typically comparable to KBT. As a result, they have low elastic moduli, often ~1-10 Pascals. Typical soft materials include liquid crystals, polymers, colloidal suspensions and emulsion drops. These materials, unlike conventional simple liquids, are locally heterogeneous and can have broken symmetries that affect their physical properties. Hence, although they often exhibit liquid-like behavior, soft materials also often exhibit properties of solids. Our laboratory studies the physics of soft materials with a focus on the connection between microscopic order and macroscopic properties. The underlying theme is to pursue basic understanding and address fundamental questions. However, we also address applied problems and pursue industrial collaborations since many of the materials we study can be viewed as model systems for those that are often used in applications.; Alberto Fernandez-Nieves is an Associate Professor in the School of Physics, Georgia Institute of Technology.; Runtime: 63:38 minutes

Initial report on Object Spreadsheets
Initial report on Object Spreadsheets McCutchen, Richard Matthew; Itzhaky, Shachar; Jackson, Daniel There is a growing demand for data-driven web applications that help automate organizational and business processes of low to medium complexity by letting users view and update structured data in controlled ways. We present Object Spreadsheets, an end-user development tool that combines a spreadsheet interface with a rich data model to help the process administrators build the logic for such applications themselves. Its all-in-one interface with immediate feedback has the potential to bring more complex tasks within reach of end-user developers, compared to existing approaches. Our data model is based on the structure of entity-relationship models and directly supports nested variable-size collections and object references, which are common in web applications but poorly accommodated by traditional spreadsheets. Object Spreadsheets has a formula language suited to the data model and supports stored procedures to specify the forms of updates that application users may make. Formulas can be used to assemble data in the exact structure in which it is to be shown in the application UI, simplifying the task of UI building; we intend for Object Spreadsheets to be integrated with a UI builder to provide a complete solution for application development. We describe our prototype implementation and several example applications we built to demonstrate the applicability of the tool.
